My five years at UBC's Emerging Media Lab was amazing in part because it fit my Experimenter's heart: every term, multiple new prototypes to create in multiple academic domains, along with the meta-experiment of how to set up the lab & culture to foster the best experiments from the students driving the work.
I've been an experimenter as long as I can remember, doing scientific experiments and mixing "potions" as a kid with my sister, experimenting in innovative ways to write code, making nontraditional art (in the 90s I made a VRML memory palace mapped along temporal, affective and sensory dimensions).
Part of what led to me starting a VR company was the delight in being able to experiment / pioneer new things. My work on haptic software was similarly exciting as I got to groundbreak multimodal haptics in interesting ways.
Part of what I find exciting about AI is that it enables me to experiment and prototype at a more rapid pace.
