In state-level housing conversations, I asked a question no one wanted to answer: “What are people in tents supposed to do tonight? It’s below freezing.” The focus was long-term planning while families were still outside. When individual stories were brushed aside as anecdotal, we started emergency housing meetings ourselves. By connecting organizations already doing similar work, we cleared a 20,000-family camper waitlist in four weeks. Sometimes you have to interrupt the room to protect people.
